I completed my first ever solo S38 valve adjustment. Let me say, WOW. I always thought my car was awesome, but now I think its super-awesome. Smooth power, more power, just that true ///M5 Sports Sedan feel. Fracking super awesome.
I'm ready for the Vintage. Am I the first?
Gary Beck and I are going evaluate my need for a TBS. After this work I'm not sure it needs it anymore.
I want to thank a member here for graciously letting me borrow his shim kit and bucket depressor. I don't know if he wants the world to know he has a shim kit and bucket depressor though so he shall remain publicly nameless unless he chimes in.

That's great to hear! How much difference was needed on how many valves? As I had noted, I found the same thing - the car absolutely woke up and became a different animal, though I had two valves that were very tight (.008/9) and many that were tighter than they should have been (.010).
My only regret for you is that your daughter is still quite young. My oldest was 10 when I did my first valve adjustment, and he was able to hang around and learn SO MUCH new vocabulary....
I almost don't blame you for not posting it here, after the wonderful thread that was the red car's for sale ad.wkohler wrote:My 533i. Feels weird. Went to a good home though.Mike W. wrote:Which one?wkohler wrote:After nearly 5 years and 6,000 miles, I sold it.

6,000 miles in 5 years? That just from shuffling it around the driveway to make room for other projects?
I never posted an ad anywhere. The car wasn't for sale but lately I had gotten a lot of PMs about it asking if I would sell. The buyer was the most persistent as I really didn't put a ton of effort getting back to him. Then once I did, he was able to convince me to sell.cddallara wrote:I almost don't blame you for not posting it here, after the wonderful thread that was the red car's for sale ad.wkohler wrote:My 533i. Lotta maintenance this week. On BB Shiftless, I cleaned up the few drops of oil that make it past the cam seal into the cap. where they combine with the terminal carbon to bleed off spark. Its over due for the timing belt change and all the other stuff .
Meanwhile, B6II has developed a
Dashboard weirdness, no OBC, no tach, no 4 way flashers. Two different circuits, 5 and 6, involved. Fuseslooked good. But they werent, 5 crumbled when I gently wire wheeled it. Metal fatigue at the terminal. Spark was arcing for the easy stuff, but crapping out under load. 6 was just loose. Problem solved with a new fuse and a pinch. Easily, the majority of gremlins live in the fuse box.
I am no stranger to the classic GBC fuse. I had bugs way before BMWs . Is it invoking Godwin to call these , Hitler's Revenge, ?
I also changed the oil. I put in 4 qts of Castrol 4T 20 w 50 for big motorcycles. SG spec oil, Lotsa ZDDP for the valve train.

Yesterday I did some glass work on the new eta. Well sorta. I called a glass guy to swap the windshield from my 85 535. Then he explained to me how to do the rear quarter glass. This car had that window shattered out by the PO who I think locked the keys in the car. A piece of plexi glass and duct tape was not good enough for me.
A good glass guy is a good thing to have. He even fixed a chip in my e30's windshield for free. He's into old Datsuns so we compared notes.
Before and after. It's hard to see but there was a pretty decent crack across windshield.

I got 3 hrs in this morning on the M5. Replaced rubber brake lines, drained oil, replaced broken diff mount and dogbones and changed diff fluid and brake fluid. I ordered more parts and a valve tappet tool. I'm glad the subframe bushings have been done before me.
edit: also just fixed all of my tail lights. Just some corroded bulb contacts.

Oh poop- I now have the bucket depressor too and we could have shared it... well at least I know where my backup is!dsmith wrote:I got 3 hrs in this morning on the M5. I also bought a shim kit which you can borrow.
I didn't know if you owned it or not and the logistics of coming down there to adjust the valves would be tough before Vintage. I'll check mine and see if you have the shims I need.rmiddendorf wrote:Oh poop- I now have the bucket depressor too and we could have shared it... well at least I know where my backup is!

I enjoyed driving mine around town today. Stopped by Coldswede's place to check out his new Hartge wheels and Continental tires (link to pic below). I should take the 'ol gal out more often. Maybe to work on Fridays, if the weather is clear and sunny.

I'm still trying to chase down a metallic-sounding rattle that is rpm-dependent. When I accelerate (con brio) in either 1st or 2nd gear, I can hear it. It is loud enough to give me pause when running the car through the gears. Initially, Coldswede and I thought it was the custom CAI heat-shield but I've now ruled it out. Next up, I'm going to check the heat shields on the exhaust system and for any driveline-related components (e.g., center support bearing). Nearly every consumable bit on this car is NEW, it seems, so I cannot imagine what it could be.
Thoughts, ideas, suggestions would be welcomed. I know this is a Tech Talk topic, so please feel free to drop me a line back-channel.

No RTT again this year?
Back on topic...
The Beasts' got his left rear tail light fixed
and Snob got her left rear extra brake light fixed along with some new-to-her wheels and rubber.
We are all happy.
I finished the drive from Santa Barbra to Seattle with my son after buying the car down there. We drove from Salem, OR to Seattle today.
Then I washed the car for the first time. In the rain.
Then I put my new floor mats in.
Then I removed the third backup-light the PO had installed.
Then I read all the PO's service records and transcribed the important bits into an epic Excel spreadsheet.

Diagnosing a fuse 5 short on Adalia. I could swear it was the hazard switch cauing issues, but the fuse popped again after removing the switch (and like a dumbass, throwing it away ). I paid more attention to what happened in the car before it popped again. I noticed my radio was cutting on and off a few times, followed by blowing the fuse. I removed the faceplate thinking that would be enough. Nope. Fuse blew again (after 15 minutes of driving, not imediately). So yesterday I took the entire radio out and will roll without so I can diagnose. So far this morning all is well. If I get home with the fuse still intact then I will claim the radio as the source of the short. Fortunately one of Kenwood's distro/repair centers is 5 minutes from my place so I will be paying them a visit.
Finally finished my Natur interior in the M5. I have one decent complete seat left for sale and one parts seat. Both will be listed soon for anyone doing a restoration job.
Also got the windows tinted. Best protection from the blazing Texas sun and the curious eyes.
Thanks to Sherman for both. Also did some other odds and ends. Got a new set of wheels and SPAX is about to arrive at my door tonight
