Even more awesome...Jeremy wrote:Did emissions. Got it aligned. Removed catalyzed exhaust. Removed driveshaft. Installed CSB on replacement driveshaft. Removed entire shifter assembly.
Most of this stuff (aside from the exhaust work) I'd never done before and it's taken way way longer than anticipated. Hopefully re-assembly tomorrow goes quicker.
What did you do to your E28 today?
Spent a few hours under it over the last couple of days; got the driveshaft off, exhaust loose, trans support, chassis brace and sway bar undone, and a bunch of other stuff. When we went to pull the transmission discovered the reverse Torx-headed bolts holding it on, and that my meager set of sockets weren't going to get the job done. Visited several stores before I found any -- I thought Sears had everything! -- and had to part with about $40 for a full set because they didn't have single sockets. Oh well; it's only money, and they'll last me for life, right? Yeah, I should'a knowed they'd be there, planned ahead & saved some $$s...
Now the deal is to find the time to finish the job this weekend while working around all the stuff my wife has planned for the weekend. House-full of people today and rain in the forecast for the whole day, but no work tomorrow!

Alternator out and stripped down. Casing sanded and ready for paint. Broke a few of the teeth on the little toothed wheel on the adjuster bracket. Grrrrrr. On the order list. The perils of being the first person to undo things in 20 years...
Horns stripped, sanded and liberally gunked in Hammerite to keep the rust at bay.
Radiator mounts wire-brushed to within an inch of their lives and thoroughly gunked.
Right headlight unit stripped down and the bracket wire-brushed, sanded and given it's first coat of satin black. Chrome surrounds given a bit of a polish too. Just have to figure out which of the plastic adjusters should be saved and which I need to order now.. And buy some Rustins to do the lamps and alternator tomorrow!

I finally fixed the brake light! Added coolant and replaced the original overflow hose. Ordered a brake pad wear sensor.
Last week I fabricated a new bracket for the trunk lid. The one that wears a goove in it from the spring. I had welded the old one, but it was wallered out on the rivet pivot too.

No, due to incomplete diagnosis by the mechanic shop... However, he did order the giubo and vibration damper from the dealer which took 2 days for the parts. During the wait jacked up the car and saw the rear universal joint was bad, ordered a drive shaft from bavauto and has it shipped overnight. After removing the drive shaft...using "Wkohler's 10 minutes procedure" for a half hour. I went to the dealer for the parts...the salesman ordered a center bearing and giubo, out of frustration I left the giubo at the dealer, mainly because my had about 10,000 miles within 6 years. Ordered the vibration damper and bite the bullet and order the giubo along with those other parts. So if the dealer would had order the correct parts, I would have installed them. I was by the dealer too.C.R. Mocking it was not my intent...the steps you gave was very useful for anyone who has never change a bmw drive shaft before. I am sorry if it sound like that.wkohler wrote:It takes me 10 minutes under a car once it's up. I didn't say it was a "10 minute procedure." Don't mock it.twin55 wrote:After removing the drive shaft...using "Wkohler's 10 minutes procedure" for a half hour.
