Drove it all day long.

But the Billy sports and the black front/rear windshield lockstrips arrived ~ just wating on the H&Rs and hardware from AH. Then I can relax in what spring will bring.

Swapped the broken fog light switch for a good one, swapped the jammed passenger seat buckle for a new one, fixed my brake lights, and finally figured out why my driver side fog light wasn't working. Combine all that with the new catalytic convertor that was installed the day before my 535i and I are happy campers.

Finished the Euro lights up front. Googly eyes!


Then took out the old cracked dash and prepped the replacement for install with venting and VIN tag.

The original dash had two layers of extra insulation on it - one adhered to the dash itself, one wrapping the vent ductwork. There was no removing the insulation on the dash itself, but I did transfer the insulated ducting to the replacement.

The replacement is from a 4/87 535i. Is the extra insulation an M5 thing?

The windshield is out, making the dash job MUCH easier (shrunken gaskets needed replacement anyhow). Anyone doing the dash replacement with the windshield in place is a HERO!

Replaced fuel sending unit (I probably should just by a new one instead of scouring junkyards for them.)

Installed an uncracked rear bumper and the left front bumper trim on my Super eta. Scored both from a yard.

Replaced all 4 outer window seals. Parts came from my local dealer within 2 days. With BMW CCA membership, they were cheaper than Pelican Parts.

Oh and replaced right rear window slides,cause they disintegrated.

Replaced all fuses, cleaned and re-tensioned all contacts.
It was about damn time too - about a half dozen fell apart in my hands while removing them; a 25 amp had split and partly fused to the contact on one end.
Sunroof and defog came back to life - and I felt all around better as some of them looked like they'd been in the car since leaving the factory.
However, seems both sets of front ambers are now devoid of life; indicators work, but front park and side marker lights don't.

Also, installed the small toolkit today - nice not having a gaping wound in the center of the trunk lid.

Then, we danced!
Well, as much as one can in traffic and pelting rain.

Realized why my sunroof pees on me, and the inside kickpanel.

The hose was cut off about 8" down the A pillar when someone cut/welded the roof back on.

Anyone wanna sell some sunroof drainpipes?

Put new bulbs in the interior lamps, got the kick panel put back on, put in speedo from 528e odometer still doesn't work but hey I got an accurate speedo now despite my dad bending the needle a bit.

Buttoned the beater up and drove her on the highway for the first time in almost a year.

Couple shake-down days, then she goes to her new owner!

Started it and drove it. Albeit with no exhaust to speak of past the down pipe, but it seems I got the B35/5sp swap down.

Even with the 3,25 lsd it's pretty ballsy. Can't wait to get the 3,73 lsd in. :haul:

This week = exhaust week.

Bled the cooling system once again, didn't overheat at all!

Although I found a leaky hose back near the firewall.. just a slow drip. Very happy that it wasn't leaking from the head. Now to figure out why it stutters under acceleration. Best way I can describe it is it sounds like a Subaru WRX.

Significantly shortened the life of the tires. I painted a nice #11 all the way across the parking lot behind work :haul: :D
The e2i conversion may be the single best thing I've done in life. It is addictive though, I'm already thinking boost... :roll:

Simply put, late model "i" head with the "e" bottom end. There's a lot of people on R3v that have done it.

Cleaned out the trunk/interior. Found out I have a blown channel in my amp. :x Wrapping things up to get exhaust on it this week.

In the ongoing pursuit of electrical demons...

None of the front marker and running/indicator lights worked after replacing the fuses day before last.

Removed front marker and running/indicator light covers.
Replaced/tested all bulbs.
Removed and cleaned marker buckets (how easy is it to remove running/indicator buckets? Didn't want to break anything so left them be.)
Sprayed down bulb sockets and rear connectors w/CRC 2-26 Contact Cleaner.
(can't source out DeoxIt locally - even NAPA & Lordco were seemingly "unaware" of its existence)

Driver's side came out smelling like proverbial roses.
Passenger's side - nothing... nada... regardless of light switch position (running only; or, running as well as head and tail lights).
After repeated cleaning attempts, double checking the fuse hadn't blown... re-removing and buffing what contacts I could get at w/emery cloth... nope.
The passenger side running light did flicker once when I lost my patience and kicked the bumper.
Given the lovely lighting in our underground parking and the nearest socket for a trouble light a mere 60+ feet away, I haven't taken the time yet to source out and follow the wiring.

Halfway there! Any helfpul hints welcome.

Went to a pick n pull where I had found a nice (for a junkyard) 535is, pulled the air dam off it, with brackets, and also the bumper valences that were all in good shape, and not weathered! $50.

Went to sew a new shifter boot, but broke the needle on my machine at the end of making boot #1...which ended up too small :bawl:

Installed a stereo into it, finalized some jacked up wiring behind the dash, finished the deep clean of the dash pieces. All the fingernail gunk and probably cigarette gunk that had built up around the buttons was disgusting! All parts came off, and got a scrub down in the sink. This is my first e28, and it's a rescue.

Figured out that my cutting out problem was a low fuel condition coupled with a bad tank pump...so thats a relief.

Decided I was going to stick with 17" rubber, and narrowed it down to 2 or 3 oem BMW rims, now have to search out a good deal.

Now I have a list of more parts to get (speakers), and lots of tranny noise driving to work tomorrow morning.
