Yeah... having experianced an e28 with no power steering (accidentally), i can't say i'd be to eager to be rid of it. At least, not in a daily.

Raw, baby, RAW!!

I drove an e28 with manual steering at socal vintage. It had a 4 banger and skinny (ahem, STOCK) tires on it and it wasn't too bad. We shall see...

Ha! Yesterday when i drove her (been dd'ing the e30) i reached down to the center console to roll down the windows... Oops.

Changed the oil and filter.
Had my Alpine head unit installed.
Changed the MAF.
Changed the O2 sensor.
Topped off the power steering fluid.

Took 5 minutes to install a new, better, stronger zip tie on the back side of my shifter plate. The 2 I originally installed earlier this year fell out, causing the shifter to be sloppy and spongy on the upshifts.

I <3 zipties.

OBC Led Conversion

Did the OBC LED conversion on my car since one of the old bulbs had burned out. Searched around the forum and largely followed this guide I found in one of the threads: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2205147/1 ... -5-series/

This may have been covered extensively somewhere I didn't find, but I wanted to share the components I used because I think they produced a near-perfect match to stock lighting:

560ohm 1/2W 5% resistor (Radioshack part #271-1116)
Two Linrose Superbrite 5mm LEDs 20mcd 20mA, 60 degree viewing angle, model B4304H3 (orange)

I was going to go with the LEDs suggested in the writeup, but no Radioshacks in my area had the right one, so I picked up these LEDs at a local "legit" electronics store instead. Soldered them in series, resistor first, followed by the 2 LEDs. Came out very nice. The color and brightness match is almost 100% spot on. The OBC is now just a hair more dim than the stock Radio lights when interior brightness is at max.

Attended my first CCA DIY event and had a blast. Met some great fellow Bimmer owners -- though I was a little surprised to be the only one representing for E28s out of 20 cars!

Changed the manual trans oil and replaced the fuel filter -- slowly working through my very long list. Also got good advice on the next project -- adjusting my steering box to eliminate the slop in there.

Ever since doing the euro front bumper conversion (highly recommended, by the way), i've been without any parking lights on the front, since the euro turn signals are single filament.

So today... Installed city lights. Only took about an hour or so.

Had a lot of help and we pulled the motor. Not an easy job. Need to replace leaky rear main seal, trashed clutch, and a few other parts. Head will be sent out. Lots of work ahead for this Winter project car :)

Just finished installing the heater valve rebuild kit using these instructions. I didn't have to remove the two screws holding it to the firewall. Just unscrewed the four screws on top and popped it out.

Very sad I know, but finally got around to replacing the 4 dead interior lights and the George Graves dimmer circuit. The interior lights have been blown since I bought the car in 2006 and I just always had higher priority items to take care of. Love the new dimming lights! Thanks George!

I've had that thing sitting on my desk since August, 2010. Have yet to put it in a car.

:D I waited for it to get dark and then went out and turned my lights on, just for a quick look. I am happy. ...I need to replace the amber bulbs the kit came with with clear, but, i am happy.

Pulled the complete exhaust system and scrapped all that disintegrating foam crap off the underside of the hood from the 535i project car.

Bought my first e28 on Monday!
1986 535i 5 spd for $760 [seller didn't have change for a $20 dollar bill... :) ]

Today:
- attacked the groaning sound from the power steering pump by replacing the brake pressure differential switch
- adjusted e-brake so I no longer have to pull it into the back seat to get it to hold...
- examined my loud exhaust problem; turns out it may be the cat; we'll try some cheapo exhaust tape first!
- did a bit of degreasing in the engine bay; more to work to do there!

Ahhh, nothing like a fresh project!

uhhmn you should replace the power steering pump filter. A clogged filter or a loose belt will make the pump groan...

(Yesterday) I took a wire wheel on my drill to the tail light/brake/reverse/turn light contacts, bulbs, and holders. I replaced the holders that needed it and wire wheeled the ones that I could. I also retentioned the holders that needed it, slapped a bit of dielectric grease on all of the contacts and said goodbye to my brake check light that kept haunting me mid way to work. Yay!

I checked the filter; no clogs, fluid looked clean.
Fortunately it looks like it was just the switch that was allowing air into the system. The reservoir was bubbly... But not anymore!

I lent my father the car and it came back with a vacuum leak under the dash, and a vacuum hose hanging down by the hood latch... i read its for the HVAC temp sensor, can anyone confirm this?

Yup; that's it exactly. It's in the lower dash panel just above the clutch pedal.

Used it to take my 550i to the dealer for 50k service. The ride home was much more fun in the 88 M5.

Did a valve adjustment and valve cover gasket replacement.

Next up: front brake pads, air filter and distributor cap rotor.

Yay for tune ups. :/
