Cruise Control Cable replacement w/pics

I thought I'd start a picture thread on replacing the CC cable after not seeing much on this topic. I finally got around to replacing the faulty CC cable today. I had it disconnected since it started to hold the throttle open a little when I disengaged from cruise mode. The plastic had broken at the barrel end and hung up every time I switched off the CC leaving me with the motor revving at about 3K. My throttle cable was in the same condition. I replaced both.
The CC cable part numbers are different for each model:
535i: 65711370164
M5: 65711386119
528e: 65711371394 (realoem shows ended for the eta)

Here are the old cables before


I took my servo off the M5 to make it easier to manuver and for pictures, you may not have to remove it.

Push plastic tab down with a screwdriver and gently pull cable end out.





Once the metal clip is exposed slide out the end of the old cable and slide in the new cable end.







Push and lock in the new cable to servo.

I know this is a REALLY old thread but does anyone have a pic of their M5 engine compartment showing the cruise control actuator mounted? I've transplanted a S38 into my 535is and ordered the M5 part number cable as my 535 cable is too short. I was assuming the M5 cable is longer but the cable I received (tagged with the M5 part #65711386119) appears to be identical to my 535 cable so now I'm thinking possibly the actuarator is mounted in a different spot. Or maybe the cable is mis-labeled. Thanks.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, looks like I'll be fabbing yet another custom M5 bracket to mount it under the coolant tank. I got the new cable from Turner and it seems to be the same cable that came off my 535is ($35 #65711386119). Sorry - I just re-read your post, if you were asking about the actuator I have a working one from my 535is that I'm re-using.

It's the same overall length as my 535is cable the only difference I can see is that is doesnt include the bellows and the adjustment is made with a threaded barrell nut and not the knurled plastic nut on the end.

I'm trying to do a Control Cruise retrofit into my 525i (M30B25 engine) and I found an used actuator (65711370159) with the bowden cable. Same actuator was used in all Euro and US e28's and also e23's. But when I tried to put the actuator in the specific e28 place (near the fuse box) I realize the bowden cable is too short...at least 10cm (4 inches) but if I put the actuator below the expansion tank (as M5) the bowden cable length is perfect....looking RealOem seems to be the actuator belongs to an e23 with this bowden cable: 65711371419.

So if possible can anyone take a measure of the BCable length???...I mean 65711370164 or 65711386119 (same overall length according kcld)

What I measured in my bowden is: just the cable cover (black plastic) is about 20" (50cm), full length is about 27.5" (70cm). Starting measure point is red arrow. This is just to evaluate if it is worth buying a new bowden cable xxx0164 or xxx6119.

Hello DavidE9, thanks for your pictures.

From what I see in your photos, the shorter cable is similar in length to my bowden, about 20 inches. The other longer one (almost 24 inches, which has the 4" missing to place the actuator in the "normal" e28 position) could be the one used in all M30 engines (all Euro and US versions), i.e. the correct one 65711370164.

I'm 99% sure my bowden is e23's 65711371419. Now I'm thinking about what will be the best position for the actuator, try to find the 24" bowden or stay and use this 20"........either way I have to drill the inner fender.

My bowden cable: 20"....4" short to "normal" position


Your Photo: I'm agree the longer (24") cable should be your original bowden in 535is


My dilemma: I'm still waiting the rest of the Control Cruise parts, wirings, stalk, etc, so I have time to thinking about it.

"Normal" e28 position, challenge to find the right bowden...


Or M5 position, my e23's bowden fit perfectly....

Trying to summarize:

65711370164 is correct for the US non-m5 models but is NLA.

65711371419 might be specific to the M5, is ~4" shorter than 65711370164, and looks available. It's not clear how it mounted in an M5.

65718359271 came up as a possible replacement but is NLA.

65711384731 is for E34, has the bellows, and is available. But I don't know its length. Just need to find someone with an E34 to measure it.

I bought that cable and tried it on my 535i. The sheathing is the same length but the cable is shorter so the location of the actuator will have no effect on the cable length. If you look at the picture you notice that the length of the sheating is almost the same but there are about 3 inches difference in the cable. This will not work no matter where you install the actuator. I did order the cable to try it as an option but it's not a viable option. Anyway needing an M5 cruise control cable let me know. Here are some pictures of both of them next to each other with the actuator side aligned.

My M30 inner cable was damaged but I saved the plastic adjusting nut and bellows if that can help anyone out happy to donate to the cause as the S38 cable obviously doesnt use them.
