I have an E34 M5 Getrag 280 Trans for sale, 3rd and 4th gear syncros are bad, it would make a good parts transmission or a great rebuild, looking to get 600.00 or best offer as the parts for these transmissions are very expensive and they bolt right up the e28 M5 motor.

Someone has got to be interested in this transmission ?

Does this transmission have the holes in the bell housing for the speed and reference sensors?

I am located in Mohnton PA, zip 19540, I am not sure if it has the holes for any sensors, What are you using the trand for? it is a getrag 280 5 speed tranny. from a 91 M5

From memory of my 3.8L 5 speed M5 , No it doesn't, but euro cars could be different.

I am personally not using it for anything, as I have two 280s that need work, but the point was that if it doesn't have the sensor holes, it is of limited use to e28 M5 owners.

I believe it does have the holes for the sensors, I know these trasmissions are able to be bolted up and used on the E28 M5, so it is of use.

Yes, because they are e28 M5 transmissions. Getrag stopped putting holes in the 260 transmissions when BMW updated the engine management to Motronic 1.3 for the E34. They probably did the same thing with the 280 box. The easy way for you to find out is to look. There would be a large boss cast into the bell housing with two radial holes around the 8 o'clock position, each with a threaded hole next to them to screw down the sensors. If yours has these holes, they would likely be plugged.

I will have to take a look tonight, I thought all e34 m5 models only have the getrag 280 and the e28 m5 model only had the getrag 260 ?

I think Moosehead's point is that although the bolt pattern is indeed identical to many "big-six" motors from 95 on down, if it doesn't have holes for the pulse generators it will not be compatible with the ignition system on the E28 M5. As long as yours has these mounting holes in the bell housing, someone could rebuild it and install it in their E28 M5.

No, E28 M5 had a 280 also.

I will take a look tongiht, i am pretty sure it will work, another source advised me to list my item because they work with the car, I will confirm tonight.

The E34 and E28 M5s both have Getrag 280 gearboxes, but the part numbers appear to be different. The parts catalog shows that the E28 trans is a 280/5.50 and the E34 has a 280/5.51 both with different BMW numbers, probably due to the sensor hole change.

The picture shown in the parts catalog does not actually represent the E34 trans, though. In the E28 picture the second trans shows the sensor hole mounting bosses.

I see, what about the getrag 260 trans?, or is that just a part number, but in actuality they are the same casing but with different ratios ?
